The present\nstudy aimed to clarify the current situation of this custom through the use of a questionnaire survey for\nthe junior high school students, direct observation of how people spend the end of the year and New\nYear’s Day, and interviews of the female farmers who know the local food culture well.\n　The result of questionnaire of junior high school students (N=104), showed that 56 students do not eat\nrice cakes on the New Year’s Day. Among those 56, 49 students responded that they eat rice cakes on\nother days. The observation and interviews clarified that people avoid breaking this custom, particularly\nmany homes with healthy elderly people try to protect the custom. Even if the custom not to eat rice\ncakes on New Year’s Day is kept within the household, some junior high school students didn’t know the\nreason for this custom.
